Best deer attractants

Scent and attractants aren’t magic, but when you understand what you’re doing, they change your success rate. I’ve tested different attractants through multiple seasons, and I’m going to tell you what actually works.

Estrus Scent and the Rut

During the rut—late November in Texas—doe estrus scent is your most powerful tool. Bucks are actively searching for does, and a quality estrus product will pull them toward your blind. The key is keeping it fresh and placing it where the wind carries it to approaching deer.

I place estrus scent 15 to 20 yards downwind of my blind during peak rut. Not on my boots, not right at the blind—downwind where it can work the way it’s supposed to. Bucks will follow a scent line, and if you’ve got the wind right, they’ll come to you.

Attractants work when you understand what works when and where—not as a magic bullet, but as a tool in your strategy.

Buck Urine and Early Season

Buck urine works year-round for territorial response. A buck will investigate another buck’s sign, especially if he thinks there’s competition. In early season before the rut, buck urine can bring deer in for investigation rather than breeding instinct.

Food attractants—acorn powder, apple scent, corn-based products—work better before the rut when deer are focused on calories rather than does. Switch your strategy as the season changes. What worked in October won’t work the same way in November.

Get your blind positioned right with the attractants working downwind, and you’ve got everything set up to take advantage of deer movement. Even slow mornings turn around when you stay disciplined.
